For decades, CLC operated as a single-location overnight camp. While that format created countless memorable experiences, the Cooperative Council of the Carolinas recognized an opportunity to reach even more young people. CLC is now transformed into a three-day “pop-up” experience hosted in multiple regions.

By bringing camp directly to communities across the Carolinas, participation has surged, local co-ops have deepened their engagement, and more students than ever are discovering how cooperatives enrich and strengthen the places they call home.

At CLC, students don’t just learn about leadership — they live it. Throughout the three days, participants take part in immersive workshops led by cooperatives from a variety of industries, including energy, agriculture, finance and communications. They break into teams to build and run their own mock cooperative, tackling real-world challenges and discovering how collaboration fuels innovative solutions. These activities help students uncover their strengths, build confidence, and develop essential skills they can carry into school, future careers and their communities.

The camp’s cooperative focus is complemented by high-impact leadership training that stands out on any résumé. Students gain experience in problem-solving, public speaking, decision-making and project planning. And the benefits don’t end when camp does. Participants are eligible to apply for a scholarship during their senior year of high school to support their next step, whether that’s a college, university or trade school.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of electric cooperatives and other cooperative organizations, this formative experience is accessible to all students. The cost to attend is just $45, a testament to the cooperative principle of supporting community and investing in youth. Without this support, such an affordable, high-quality leadership program simply wouldn’t be possible.
