Member Spotlight: Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity ReStores

People who shop at the three Brunswick County ReStores know what to expect: fantastic deals on everything from furniture and appliances to electronics and home goods, all expertly merchandised in a way that makes shopping fun. We asked Restore Director Brittany Pitts and Development Director Theresa Murphy to tell us more.

“Our stores are merchandised like high-end furniture stores,” said Brittany. “We get quality donations because people know it’s for a great cause. For example, local builders will donate the contents of the model homes they’ve staged. Lowe’s Home Improvement donates a truck full for each store weekly, including their discontinued lines, cabinets and scratch and dents. People move here from out of state, and make donations when they find their new home can’t accommodate everything they’ve brought with them.”

“The Southport store has a dedicated Christmas room year-round,” adds Theresa. “It’s run by two volunteers, Martha and Margaret, identical twin sisters in their seventies, and people just love them! Each store has its own personality, and its own Facebook page that features daily deals. In addition to department sales, every Wednesday is 20% off for seniors, and every day is 20% off for military.”

“Nothing would be possible without donations,” continues Brittany. “If you’re renovating or moving or just have something too big to fit in your car, give us a call to schedule a free pick-up. If you’re having a yard sale, call us a week ahead of time. Keep in mind we can’t take mattresses, clothes, baby items or toys.”

“Every donation, and purchase, is a meaningful way to support our mission,” adds Theresa. “You’re helping build safe, affordable homes for hardworking families right here in our community.

“Every donation, and purchase, is a meaningful way to support our mission,” adds Theresa. “You’re helping build safe, affordable homes for hardworking families right here in our community. Each future homeowner is required to complete 300 sweat equity hours building their home, and they volunteer many hours in a ReStore, which is all in addition to their full-time job. They become like our family, and going to the groundbreaking, wall blessing and dedication ceremonies is a very moving experience.”

“Kevin is a great example,” continues Brittany. “He’s a single dad who wanted more for his teenage daughter. He was such a hard worker and did many more hours than he needed to. He’s so dedicated, and so appreciative. That’s why we love what we do!”
