“My grandaddy, Bill Scott, was an accountant for Dixie Grain in Chadbourn. My dad, Will, was interested in the feed business, so grandaddy became a partner in Dixie Grain. When dad graduated from NC State, he purchased the remaining ownership and they established Chadbourn Feed Service. My dad, brother Ethan, and grandma, Diane, still run it today.

When I graduated from NC State, the opportunity for the new store in Shallotte came available, and we opened in 2016. Our bulk accounts are generally smaller than in Columbus County, and we knew we wanted to add more retail, so in addition to everything you’d expect to find, you’ll also see things like Turtlebox Speakers, Traeger Grills and Bayou Classic Fish Cookers.

Creating a welcoming, community-based atmosphere is important to me and to Julia Hargis, who helps manage the store. Customers have turned into friends over the years, and the best part of the day is seeing them come in. It’s a good place to come to talk about life. We try to do our part in the community and have supported local agriculture-based programs. Every spring, the Coastal Garden Club of Shallotte holds a plant sale to raise money for local scholarships and community programs, and whatever they don’t sell they bring here and we sell it for them.

We love to assist if you have an issue. If something in your garden isn’t producing, and if we don’t have the answer, we can talk to the agricultural extension service or other experts for you. Whether you have a fungus problem on some ornamentals, or a newborn in the pasture that mama won’t take to, we can help. We’ve been a Purina dealer since the ’70s, and they have excellent teams of vets who do a lot of research and have lots of answers.

We’re planning a customer appreciation event this fall, and details will be on our website and Facebook. You can plan on plenty of food, vendors, information, and a petting zoo area. And we’ve opened a second Scott’s Farm & Family, in Leland, so please visit us there, and say hi to manager Belinda Williams, too!
