Member Spotlight: The Maze Craze at Galloway Farm

If you want to celebrate fall in authentic style, the Maze Craze in Hallsboro should be tops on your list. Galloway Farm, a fifth-generation working farm, opens to the public for a few weeks each year, featuring its famous Maze Craze. There are five miles of corn mazes to explore, games to play in the courtyard, a tractor-pulled wagon ride, animals to enjoy, flowers to pick, and food to savor. We asked Alma Galloway to tell us how she got it started, and how she’s made it different from other mazes.

“Years ago, I had a fifth birthday party for our son, Walker, and invited his classmates and their families from his school in Brunswick County, to the farm. It started at 11 a.m., and many guests were still there that evening. They all just enjoyed being on the farm, riding the wagon out to feed the cows, playing with the goats, experiencing new things.

I loved sharing what’s special about the farm and was thinking about the best way to do more of it. After some research, and time convincing my husband, we opened to the public in 2011. A few thousand people came that first year, and we’ve been growing ever since. We don’t create a festival atmosphere, it’s simple family fun. We have corn hole, and a rubber duck race powered by a hand pump that moves the ducks down the trough. You can sit under a tree and watch your kids play.

The design for the big maze is different each year, based on the logo of our featured advertiser – it’s Fly ILM this year – it’s the size of 11 football fields!

But we do take our mazes very seriously! The big maze is one of the largest in southeastern NC, and it’s a unique experience because of a game a friend and I designed that is so much fun! It tracks you as you scan checkpoints, search for hidden items, and you can see on your phone where you are in the maze. When you exit it, if you have successfully located all the objects, it records your time and place on the leader board. We have a two-acre fun maze for children, with three different story trails. You follow the arrows and read the story as you go along. Spookley the Square Pumpkin is one of them – he’s an outcast and doesn’t fit in but saves the farm because of his unique shape. We have lots of school groups that come just for these stories, and they love Spookley.

Come spend a day on the farm with us! We’re open from Sept. 20 – Nov. 9 on the weekends, and by reservation during the week. Check our social media or call if you’re wondering about the weather. Happy fall, y’all!
