Tideland set new load record Feb. 1

Connie Martin, Pantego

Tideland set a new system load record during Winter Storm Gianna. Our system peaked at 127.91 megawatts the morning of Sunday, Feb. 1, at 8:16 a.m. The previous record was 114.8 megawatts set in February 2015. Tideland’s total distribution system capacity in 2015 was 157 megawatts. Today it stands at 250 megawatts due to important capital investments Tideland has made to serve a growing membership.

During the winter storm a conservation alert was issued to members south of the Pamlico River on behalf of our transmission provider, Duke Energy. Dominion Power is our transmission provider for Ocracoke and areas north of the Pamlico River. You can rest assured that the conservation alert was not due to Tideland’s own distribution system capacity. We thank each member that actively responded to the extraordinarily rare alert.

The extended cold snap also saw a large portion of our membership set records for household energy consumption at the end of January into the start of February. In the first 7 days of February, Tideland amassed 270 heating degree days. That means in the first week of February, homes required more than half the home heating they would normally need for the entire month. At press time, we were on track to have the coldest home heating season in over a decade.

We’ve worked hard to encourage members to sign up for high energy use alerts and saw considerable success in that effort as Gianna approached. Those members received timely feedback about high energy consumption which helps fend off billing surprises. If you have not enrolled in this free alert service please do so today. You can enroll via the member portal or call us at 252.943.3046. We’re here 24/7.

Lastly, if you are struggling to pay an unusually high bill give us a call before service is interrupted for non-payment. We can sometimes craft payment arrangements for qualifying members. Furthermore, we may be able to point you to resources for financial assistance.
