Summer in North Carolina brings long sunny days, high humidity, and the hottest temperatures of the year. The good news is that with a few simple changes at home, you can stay comfortable and safe while being efficient with lowering your energy consumption.
- Stay hydrated and wear light, loose clothing throughout the day to help regulate your body’s temperature.
- Avoid using large appliances, such as washers and dryers, during the peak hours between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
- Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable setting and use fans to help circulate air. A small adjustment can make a difference.
- Use sun protection such as hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and SPF-protected clothing when outside during the day.
- Check on elderly neighbors and loved ones. Extreme heat can be dangerous, and a quick call or visit can make a big difference.
- Keep your pets inside, if possible. When they are outside, make sure pets have access to a shaded area and plenty of fresh water.
- Consider cooking outside to keep your home cooler. Cooking outdoors, when possible, helps keep extra heat out of your kitchen and reduces the need to cool your home.
By working together and making mindful choices at home, we can stay comfortable while supporting a more reliable energy system.
