Brooke McNeill and Doug Loflin, your REMC Energy Advisors
As temperatures drop, keeping your home warm doesn’t have to mean higher energy bills. A few simple steps can go a long way toward improving comfort and cutting costs, especially during the coldest months.
- Seal the leaks. Drafty windows and doors let warm air escape and cold air creep in. Add weather stripping or caulk to seal gaps and help your heating system work more efficiently.
- Set your thermostat wisely. Lowering your thermostat just a few degrees, especially while you’re asleep or away can make a noticeable difference in your monthly bill.
- Use space heaters safely. Only heat the rooms you use, and always follow safety guidelines. Space heaters should be kept at least three feet from anything flammable and never left unattended.
- Wrap exposed pipes. Insulating pipes not only prevents freezing but also keeps your water heater from working overtime.
- Let the sun in. During the day, open curtains on south-facing windows to take advantage of natural heat. Close them at night to keep the warmth inside.
- Check your filters. Replace or clean HVAC filters regularly to help your system run more efficiently and reduce energy use.
