On Saturday, April 18, high school juniors from across Pender, Duplin, Sampson and Bladen counties gathered for Four County EMC’s annual Youth Leadership Power Up. A one-day event focused on building leadership skills, strengthening teamwork, and deepening students’ understanding of the cooperative model.
Held at beautiful YMCA’s Camp Kirkwood, this year’s event challenged students to step outside their comfort zones while working together through a variety of team-building activities. Throughout the day, participants developed communication skills, built confidence, and formed connections with peers from across the cooperative’s service area.
Youth Leadership Power Up is designed to prepare emerging leaders for future opportunities by introducing them to the electric cooperative difference, the importance of civic engagement, and the value of community involvement. Students also heard from guest speakers who shared insights on leadership development and opportunities available through electric cooperatives.
The event also served as the final stage in selecting Four County EMC’s representatives for two prestigious leadership opportunities.
We are proud to announce the 2026 Youth Tour winners:
- Joseph Keech IV, Pender Early College
- Maritza Mendoza, Pender Early College
These students will represent Four County EMC on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., where they will explore our nation’s history, meet elected officials, and learn more about electric cooperatives on a national level.
In addition, the following students were selected to attend The Cooperative Council of the Carolinas’ (CCC) Leadership Camp:
- Alex Lopez, Wallace-Rose Hill High School
- Emma Mobley, Wallace-Rose Hill High School
These students will participate in a regional leadership experience focused on the cooperative business model, personal development, and preparing for future career opportunities.
Four County EMC remains committed to investing in the next generation of leaders and events like Youth Leadership Power Up play a vital role in empowering students, strengthening communities, and shaping the future of our region.
