The May “Where Is This” photo by Lumbee River EMC member Kathryn Ransom shows the old Patterson Building, also known as the Flat Iron Building, at the corner of McCaskill Avenue and Patterson Street in downtown Maxton. This Robeson County landmark’s notable shape also features a distinctive clock tower. Built in 1911 for the Bank of Robeson, the structure may have been modeled after the famous Flatiron Building in New York City. It later served as a laundry mat, but reader Tony Phillips commented the building is too beautiful for laundry! The town restored it in 1997 to house the Maxton Town Hall. The building is listed on the National Record of Historical Places. The winning entry chosen at random from all correct submissions came from Virginia Lowery of Red Springs, a Lumbee River EMC member.
