Considering Solar? Call Me First

Kristen Hole, Innovative Electrification Specialist

One of my roles at the co-op is to help you make smart, informed choices when it comes to renewable energy. If you’re thinking about going solar, I encourage you to call me first. Together, we’ll look at your energy usage, discuss your expectations for a solar system, and walk through the numbers—including our avoided cost rate (what we pay for the excess energy you produce). I can also connect you with reputable installers that we’ve worked with and trust.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen some solar companies present misleading or incomplete information to our members. Some promise that you’ll never pay another electric bill again, or even that Four County EMC will pay you. Others offer “no money down” deals that come with long-term loans and hidden costs. The reality? Most homeowners still have an electric bill after installing solar, and those financing arrangements can stretch for decades.

There are also practical challenges that may not come up in a sales pitch—like what happens if you need roof repairs in a few years and your installer is no longer in business. Not all companies will service or reinstall panels they didn’t originally install, leaving you with costly headaches down the road.

Four County EMC is pro-solar—but we are firmly against our members being taken advantage of. Solar can be a great investment, but it works best when approached with eyes wide open and accurate, customized information. When we talk, I’ll give you honest answers, and together, we’ll build a plan that makes sense for your home and your future.
