Power strips and multi-outlet converters make it possible to plug several devices into one outlet, which can be just fine for smaller, low-wattage devices that use less power. But when it comes to large or heat-producing appliances, it’s a different story — more than one on an outlet can be dangerous.

There are about 45,000 home electrical fires each year, half of which are caused by home wiring or lighting equipment, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Here are some rules of thumb to use outlets safely and keep home circuits from overloading:
