“Who doesn’t love an old country barber shop?”
Gail Bunch, Clarendon, a member of Brunswick Electric
Floyd’s City Barber Shop conjures up the nostalgia and communal gathering spot for some of the latest gossip in Mayberry, the fictional town in The Andy Griffith Show. Owner Jeff Doty has taken Floyd’s spot as today’s barber, overseeing one chair. He welcomes walk-ins for a $17 haircut, and typically lots of questions about the historic business. A large cutout of Floyd from the Andy Griffith Show is situated next to a barber chair, a favorite spot for photos. Floyd’s is actually older than the show, dating back to 1916. It has moved a couple of times during that 110-year period but celebrates 80 years in its current location next year. Located next to the Snappy Lunch, it’s a nod to the nostalgia of the show and bygone days. Even if you’re not looking for a haircut, make it a stop on your visit, especially if you’re a Mayberry fan. The owner welcomes all visitors.
