Summer heat can strain both your comfort and your budget. As temperatures soar and summer energy demand peaks between the hours of 3 pm and 6 pm, it’s time to take action.
7 cost effective tips to help lower energy consumption:
- Close blinds and drapes to reduce solar heat gain. Only use ceiling fans in occupied rooms. Fans cool people not rooms.
- Check your air filter monthly and change or clean when dirty to help your HVAC system work efficiently.
- Why heat your whole house up to cook a meal in the oven? Use crockpots, toaster ovens or air fryers instead.
- Install a smart or programmable thermostat to take advantage of off-peak rates and to save when you’re away.
- Run dryers, washers and dishwashers in the early morning or late evening. Avoid the hours of 3 pm – 6 pm in summer.
- Wash full loads of laundry in cold water. Detergent and agitation, not hot water, cleans the clothes.
- Showers use less hot water but be sure to use the bathroom exhaust fan to reduce indoor humidity.
