YMCA Camp Kirkwood: A Partnership We Value

Below, watch a special interview with Camp Director Savanah Standifer and Four County EMC Vice President of Member Services Greg Sager. The video explores the camp’s rich history in our service territory and how members can support this important organization.

Who Is YMCA Camp Kirkwood?

For more than 50 years, YMCA Camp Kirkwood has welcomed children and families to experience the outdoors and the joy of discovery. Nestled on 195 acres of woodlands and centered around a 10-acre lake, the camp features hiking trails, cabins, a swimming pool, and plenty of space for reflection and growth. Located just outside Watha, the camp is easily accessible from across southeastern North Carolina.

Originally built in 1958 by the Old Wilmington Presbytery and the Presbytery of Coastal Carolinas Churches, the camp was created to provide outdoor experiences for people of all ages. Today, under the leadership of the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina, it continues that mission by helping children build confidence, explore nature, and create lifelong memories.

A Partner in Times of Need

Four County EMC is especially grateful for the support and hospitality the camp provides during times of crisis. When hurricanes, ice storms, or other severe weather bring down trees and power lines, YMCA Camp Kirkwood opens its doors to house mutual aid crews who travel to help restore power quickly and safely. Their willingness to support our crews helps us get the lights back on faster, making Camp Kirkwood a true partner in service.

The camp also hosts Four County EMC’s annual Employee Appreciation Day. Our staff enjoys the peaceful setting while Kirkwood’s team leads friendly competitions and team-building activities such as hatchet throwing, archery, and the V-swing. It is a place where employees come together to celebrate their hard work and the cooperative spirit that defines Four County EMC.

Camp Kirkwood is also the backdrop for Four County EMC’s Youth Leadership Power Up each spring. This free, one-day experience brings high school juniors together to build teamwork, confidence, and leadership skills. Through speakers, workshops, and cooperative learning activities, students learn how electric cooperatives serve their communities while discovering their own potential. Some participants may go on to attend the NRECA Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., or the Cooperative Leadership Camp hosted by the Cooperative Council of the Carolinas.

How Members Can Help
