Beneath the surface lies a hidden world of power and possibility, filled with electric currents, life-giving water, and vital utilities. Most of us never pause to consider the intricate network of underground lines that fuels our lives —until disaster strikes. Picture the chaos and frustration of accidentally hitting a buried utility line while digging. It's an alarming reminder of the importance of preparation.

Aug. 11, also known as 811 Day, holds significance for Pee Dee Electric as we deliver a crucial reminder to all members undertaking future excavation projects. Whether your project is grand or modest in scale, it is imperative to call 8-1-1 at least three business days ahead of the project requiring digging. By taking this simple and cost-free step, you contribute to the safety of both yourself and our community.

When you make a call to 811, you'll be connected to North Carolina 811, which is a nearby call center dedicated to assisting you with your digging plans. They work to inform the appropriate utility companies about your intentions. After that, skilled experts will come to your digging area and use flags, water-soluble paint, or both to indicate the whereabouts of important underground lines, such as electric or water lines.

Remember, no matter how big or small your digging project is, it's crucial to call 811. Whether you're installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, or laying a patio, make that call first. Disrupting underground utility lines can cause service interruptions, expensive repairs, and, most importantly, injuries. So, prioritize safety and call 811 to know what's below before you dig.
