Mounds Cake

Mounds, Almond Joy, Bounty—if these candy bars make your sweet tooth tingle, then this reader-submitted recipe is for you!

Ingredients

  • 1 box devil’s food cake mix

  • 2 cups sugar, divided

  • 24 large marshmallows

  • 1½ cups milk, divided

  • 1 (14 oz.) package shredded coconut

  • 1 stick butter

  • 1½ cups chocolate chips

  • 8 almonds, for garnish

Directions

  1. Mix and bake cake according to package directions. When making the cake in the photo, we chose to use two 9-inch round pans.

  2. To make the topping and the filling, combine 1 cup sugar, marshmallows and 1 cup milk in medium sauce pan. Cook over low heat until marshmallows are melted. Stir in coconut (saving some for garnish) and spread half of the mixture in between the two layers and the other half on top of the warm cake.

  3. Mix butter, 1 cup sugar and ½ cup milk in sauce pan, bring to boil and stir in chocolate chips. Spread over coconut mixture on top of the cake.

  4. Garnish with remaining coconut and almonds, if desired.

  • I would love to make this yummy cake, however, it does not say what filling goes between the two layers. I have read the recipe three times to be certain I am not overlooking this and even had an adult granddaughter who is an excellent cook look it over & her comment was, "A step is certainly missing." Thank you for your help.

  • My daughter made this recipe for her grandfather’s 58th birthday. It was a hit with everyone! It does have a whole lot of sugar so I think we’ll monitor it to a once a year type of cake but it was a nice treat and fun to make! Thank you for the easy to read and follow recipe! ❤️

  • I adored this cake. I agree, it's a special occasion type of bake but if you like chocolate and coconut, it simply doesn't get any better than this!

  • My husband absolutely loves this cake! He loves it best served cold/frozen. I meant to give it a 5 stars, but may have hit the smaller number of stars accidentally. It deserves 5 stars according to Cal!

    • Hi Terrie! So glad this cake is a hit with your husband! As big coconut/chocolate fans, it's one of ours as well. I'll add a 5-star review to even up your accidental one!

      • Thank you! We’ve made it previously, just forgot to rate it. I usually make it in a pan LARGER than a 9x13...and don’t try to layer it. Perfect balance according to Cal!
